Newcastle v Everton 0–1

Gerry’s report: Newcastle miss the target again

Newcastle 0-1 Everton. The players must have been looking at their boots instead of my column. Barry scored in the 49th minute. He was rated 8.2. The best Newcastle player got 6.9. That is a gap you can measure with a ruler. Newcastle had 17 shots. Two on target. That is a ratio I can only describe as ambitious. Everton had 16 shots and five on target. One counted. The rest were decoration. Newcastle are 13th on 11 points. Everton are 7th on 13. The points are close. The competence is not. In my day, we aimed for the woodwork. Now we aim for the stratosphere.
